The Institute was set up in 1797. The founder of the Institute and its first director was N. M. Maksimovich-Ambodik, a brilliant obstetrician and pharmacologist. The activities of D. O. Ott who became the director in 1893 was of great importance for the development of the Institute. In 1948 the Institute was included into the system of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences. In 1966 the Laboratory of Pharmacology was organized.
