The major bioethical issues in stem cell research lie in the status of the human embryo, that is, from what point in its development it should be considered morally a person. Theories of the emergence of the embryo’s personality are arbitrated according to moral, religious, biological or legal judgment. The legal dimension of the use of these cells is analyzed through the different laws that regulate the matter in Brazil and in other countries. Research on embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells shows that there are satisfactory practical results for therapeutic purposes.
