In the patrilineal Batak culture, men have a higher status than women. The ownership of a son is one of the most important things for the continuation of the clan existence. Women in a marriage cannot be separated from their reproductive roles to ensure the availability of men in the lineage of Batak society, this makes women often under tension in a marriage bond and become a burden in themselves. The paulakhon phenomenon is one of the divorce practices found in Batak society when women are considered to have failed to carry out their role in the reproduction of a son.
