A Study on The Application of Film Music Techniques: Focusing on The Film Musics of Director Kim Jee-woon & Mowg

This paper is a study that classifies and examines film music techniques through various types of music used in films. In particular, this study analyzes the music used in Kim Jee-woon’s films, ‘The Age of Shadows’ (2016) and ‘I Saw The Devil’ (2010), which appear to effectively utilize film music, and examines their respective music techniques and effects. Through this study, it was reaffirmed that the leitmotif, which is applied throughout the film, can effectively convey the theme of the film, and it was also confirmed that the application of irony music, applied contrary to the situation, maximizes its effect. It was observed that when dissonance is repeatedly used in scenes that depict tense or suspenseful situations, its effect is intensified. Therefore, it is proposed that creating a consistent system for utilizing such music can produce the same effect and enhance the overall visual experience. While there have been numerous studies on film music, research on film music techniques beyond the leitmotif has been relatively limited. Therefore, this study aims to categorize and identify the music techniques used in film music and analyze specific cases and propose a model for applying various music techniques to films. Although this study did not address the effects of sound other than music, it is hoped that further research will be conducted on the use of both film music and sound effects in the future.
