A Testbed for Synthetic Inertia Control Design using Point-on-Wave Frequency Estimates
Practical implementations of synthetic inertia (SI) control require fast and accurate frequency estimation from measurable data. While previous research has shown that SI can be effective at improving inertial and primary frequency regulation when accurate frequency measurements are available, these works typically do not include the technicalities of frequency estimation in their analysis. This paper presents a testbed that allows the user to examine such estimation methods and their effect on SI control performance. An SI control compensator is then designed and implemented for a test case. The compensator is shown to reduce many of the limitations imposed by point-on-wave based frequency estimation on the SI control action.
