Many buildings are designed aiming to consume less energy while performing the required tasks. However, buildings that are designed according to the traditional approaches represent primary consumers of energy and resources. With the increase in renewable energy resources integration, those consumers try to reduce their electricity bills using photovoltaic (PV) systems. Combining both solutions, renewable energy, and energy efficiency, they can lower energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, and cost. In this study, four school buildings in Jordan have been studied to investigate the benefit of energy efficiency solution in reducing the total PV size and electricity cost. The mayfly optimization algorithm is used to find the required PV system size needed to satisfy the school building energy demand. Some parameters and design specifications for installing PV systems and inverters have been introduced. Evaluation of economic and environmental indicators is done by using PVsyst-software to compare theoretical and simulation results.
