Mitigating Alkali Silica Reaction in Recycled Concrete
This study used concrete that incorporated virgin aggregate sources to investigate the ability for mitigating strategies to control alcali silicate reaction (ASR) expansion of concrete. The mitigation strategies were tested with ASR distressed recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) concrete. This research showed low alkali cement as the best mitigation tool for controlling potential ASR distress in RCA concrete. The results also indicate that RCA is an acceptable alternative to virgin aggregates in concrete, and that with proper mitigating techniques, ASR distressed RCA concrete mixtures can be ASR combative.
