Challenges related to automation devices with inbuilt switches
Automation devices are getting more complex by the integration of the Ethernet switch functionality into the devices. Manufacturers of industrial devices increasingly need to have deep knowledge about the basic standards associated with Ethernet in order to produce devices with predictable and stable behavior. This paper shows that the introduction of the Ethernet switch into automation devices is accompanied by a number of challenges associated with how the basic Ethernet technologies are implemented in devices. Some central challenges are discussed in detail and it is suggested how they should be handled in a professional way. It is clearly in the best interest of both the users and the manufacturers themselves that sufficient focus is put on these issues both to avoid error situations and to gain the optimal inertia from the introduction of Ethernet in automation.
