10 Peritonitis is one of the most common complications of peritoneal dialysis and a cause of catheter removals as well.1 In peritoneal dialysis centers peritonitis rate should be less than 1 per 18 months (0,67/year).1 Gram positive cocci are usually responsible for peritonitis but Gram negative cocci are cause in 20% of the cases.2 Guidelines recommend obtaining peritoneal fluid and blood cultures and start empiric antibiotic treatment immediately when peritonitis is diagnosed.1 Empirical antibiotic treatment should cover Gram positive and Gram negative microorganisms.
