An Experimental Study on the Applicability of the Light Extinction Method to a High Density Particle Cloud
The applicability of the light extinction method to a dense spray like diesel sprays was investigated experimentally using a glass bead-water suspension having a similar dimension to that of an ordinary diesel spray. The transmission was measured against particle concentration using the detection angle as a parameter. The results showed that the light extinction principle holds at a high particle concentration which is equivalent to that of diesel sprays, and that the apparent extinction coefficient, which was obtained experimentally, coincides within an accuracy of 5 percent with that theoretically calculated.
