A COMPOSIÇÃO DE LUGAR COM A MEMÓRIA E O USO DE IMAGENS NA EXERCITAÇÃO ESPIRITUAL JESUÍTICA

The picturing element was credited with great importance in the modern period. The imagery played a variety of functions, being widely used due to their attractive character, their power to transmit messages - whether they are moralizing, evangelical, political - to facilitate their comprehension and to memorize them. We will be able to verify how much the Catholic Church, more specifically the Society of Jesus, has profited abundantly from imaging in the spiritual exercises as a way of composing place with memory. Through a case study, we will find that the images that were originally designed to be seen only with the eyes of the imagination were, for political-theological reasons, materialized to indoctrinate the faithful, to direct meditative practice and to try to avoid the "danger" of fertile imaginations, which could lead to the sin of heresy.
