This exploratory study aims to investigate how research has been understood as a substantive function of the university in Ecuador, based on a documentary review and the country’s higher education laws. In turn, it is related to the own dynamics that the country has experienced in its different periods, which respond to a global process, which undoubtedly have affected the dynamics of the universities; as well as the research that is generated from there.
