Smart Cities and Intelligent Transportation in Traditional Cities. Ten Design Principles and One Case Study
The integration of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and Smart City (SC) technologies is by no means an easy process especially in cities that have been designed in the past and face multiple problems. The use of new technologies often proves ineffective without the simultaneous redesign of public transport, public spaces and city processes. With this paper, an attempt is made to crystallize ten design principles for the effective integration of new ITS and SC technologies in traditional cities. The central dimension of public space, urban pollution, access for pedestrians, cyclists and the disabled, anti-ghetto and decentralization renovations, waste management and public consultation are emphasized. Through the brief presentation of the conclusions, an attempt is made to reveal the philosophy of the proposed principles by suggesting an implementation plan for the city of Patras.
