Characteristic Modes Analysis of Orbital Angular Momentum Antenna
Characteristic Mode Theory is proposed as a systematic method for antenna design, and it provides an easy way to understand the physics behind the radiation of microstrip patch antennas. It has been shown that characteristic modes are orthogonal. In this paper, elliptical patch antennas, with easy fabrication and a single-feed circular polarization, which can generate OAM of 1=2 at 2.4 GHz, is first analyzed using CM theory. The coaxial probe feed position is then appropriately selected to excite the desired CMs with respect to their modal currents. The modal significance and characteristic currents of the elliptical patch are analyzed to describe and explain the performances of the structure. Simultaneously, OAM antennas along with analysis results are given, which clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.
