A Review on Blockchain Technology in Food and Agriculture Sectors
The world experiences tremendous barriers in providing food for the population increasing daily. Distinctively, the challenges are caused by climate change, diseases outbreak, drought, desertification, floods, pests and loss of biodiversity. To resolve some of these problems and to make appealing as well as profitable situations in agriculture for those involved in feeding the planet, like the smallholder farmers, innovation in agricultural processes is required. Recently, an emerging technology called blockchain has received a great deal of interest from researchers in many different fields, especially the food and agricultural industries. The existing reviews are relatively general and investigating the current challenges of blockchain technology in the food and agriculture sectors has been missed in the literature. Therefore, the present paper aims to present a review on blockchain technology in the food and agriculture domain to examine the issues and challenges of blockchain technology to address how unique features of this technology will revolutionise the food and agricultural sectors. Consequently, the theoretical foundations of various articles published in high ranked scientific journals during 2016 and 2020 are included in this review. This research provides an extensive review of blockchain technology studies and ascertains trends and emerging research areas.
