The Semiotic Textological Representation of Meaning in István Örkény’s One-Minute Story Az élet értelme [The meaning of life] The theoretical foundation for the semiotic textological representation of meaning is provided by János Petőfi S.’s double sign model that presupposes an objectified or objectifiable level of meaning both in the case of the signifying and the signified component as well as a mentally-rendered level of the user of the sign. The former is independent of all factors of communication, thus it exists only in theory and is inaccessible within the framework of analytical approach; the latter has as many variants as many interpretations the text goes through. Within the framework of the semiotic textological representation of meaning, I characterize the mental, referential, communicative, and associative levels of meaning in István Örkény’s one-minute story titled Az élet értelme [The meaning of life]. The analysis illustrates how the meaning of the text as a complex sign is built up and what knowledge base the analyst relies on in the process of textual interpretation, while as a case study it also illustrates the approach to meaning used in semiotic textology.
