A modified flow enforcement technique for preventive congestion control in ATM networks
Due to the diversity of service and performance requirements, requiring new QOS measures; and, also, due to the significant decrease in the ratio of transmission to propagation delays, undermining the traditional flow control schemes, new flow control schemes are evidently needed for BISDN-ATM networks. Focusing on the "flow enforcement" mechanism as part of the preventive congestion control in ATM networks, the authors attempt to modify the "exponentially weighted moving average" (EWMA) flow enforcement technique. The 'enhanced EWMA', the authors call the EEWMA, is proposed as an alternative flow enforcement mechanism that overcomes the major disadvantage of the EWMA, thus becoming a powerful candidate for the standardization of the flow enforcement in ATM networks. The various design issues of the EEWMA are first discussed. The performances of both the EWMA and the EEWMA mechanisms are then evaluated via simulation, under similar environments. Simulation results show that the EEWMA is consistently better. No theoretical analysis is presented.<>
