The economic development creates preconditions for the country to stay competitive, to properly use the labour force and to ensure the growth of gross domestic product. It follows that the assessment of country‘s competitiveness is one of the major objectives of economic science and tasks addressed by the economists. The object of the research – the economic development as the way to ensure the country‘s competitiveness. The purpose of this article – to assess the economic development of Lithuania in 2005–2015 years. To achieve this objective the main tasks are formulated: to analyse the scientific literature in the area of the economic development, to assess the economic development of Lithuania and to make the proposals of the promotion of economic development. The following research methods have been applied: the analysis of scientific literature, both the theoretical and practical claims matching methods, the analysis of statistical data and the calculation of total factor productivity.
