Cooperative Learning in Social Studies

The teaching of Social Studies must be in correspondence with the evolution of society, currently marked by scientific and technological advances. This essay aims to analyze the importance of cooperative work as an active method for teaching and learning Social Studies; To achieve this purpose, a systematized bibliographic review was developed through hermeneutic methods and content analysis. Among the significant findings provided by the authors consulted is the conception of cooperative learning as an active methodology, based on the constructivist principle of student participation as the center of the teaching-learning process through teamwork, with the aim of developing cognitive, procedural and attitudinal abilities. In addition, cooperative learning strategies are emphasized as a way to develop social skills that facilitate: the integration of students into society, understanding the importance of living in community and the need for mutual support to achieve common goals; as well as, in the feasible cooperative techniques to be applied to the teaching and learning of Social Studies, among them, those of dialogue, information processing, the joint construction of knowledge and problem solving.
