Chapter Four: Archaic and Classical Ceramics of Eleon

Abstract:After a long gap in the ceramic record following the twelfth century bc, ceramic materials dating from the eighth through the fourth century bc are documented in our excavations. This contribution presents for the first time the key deposits of Archaic and Classical material identified on the acropolis of Eleon from 2011 to 2014, including the evidence for the dating of the polygonal wall, the only monumental construction of this period identified so far at the site. Attention is also drawn to the large quantities of votive materials recovered from the ramped entryway and other areas of the site, which appear to attest to one or more cults operating on the acropolis during the sixth through the fourth century bc, if not earlier.Résumé:Si le mobilier céramique n'est plus attesté après le XIIe siècle av. J.-C., il réapparaît dans nos fouilles à partir du VIIIe et jusqu'au IVe siècle av. J.-C. Cette contribution révèle pour la première fois le matériel des époques archaïque et classique mis au jour sur l'acropole d'Héléon entre 2011 et 2014. On y compte d'ailleurs des éléments permettant de dater le mur polygonal, la seule construction monumentale que le site a livrée jusqu'à présent pour cette période. Cette contribution s'intéresse également au matériel à vocation votive, retrouvé en abondance sur le site, notamment à proximité de la rampe d'entrée. On peut ainsi penser qu'au moins un culte fut pratiqué sur l'acropole d'Héléon entre le VIe et le IVe siècle av. J.-C., voire plus tôt.
