The paper proposes an IoT-based approach for increasing energy efficiency in the case study of the administrative buildings in the Port of Durres, Albania. The study is realized in cooperation with the port authorities who made available data on the energy consumption in the buildings. Various solutions with devices, sensor networks, and remote control of the energy flow, for monitoring and saving the consumption of electrical energy in the buildings, are proposed and assessed. The IoT technology optimizing energy consumption transforms the studied buildings into “smart ones”. The IoT solutions in the paper are based on a virtual model for the green transformation of the studied port buildings. An IoT-based plan to improve the building's energy efficiency is proposed. The necessary sensors for the building's monitoring are considered. A Buildings Energy Management System is proposed.
