Methodologies incorporating the technique of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry have been used for this purpose. A number of products from all four DNA bases and several DNA-protein cross-links in isolated chromatin have been identified and quantitated. Product formation has been shown to depend on the free radical-producing system and the presence or absence of oxygen.
