Use of rural slaughterhouse wastes (SHWs) as fertilizer in agriculture: a review
Bovine blood, rumen digesta and other animal byproducts are the major slaughterhouse wastes. Disposal of slaughterhouse wastes through landfilling has been an environmental ultimatum in all parts of the world. Rural slaughterhouses generate a large amount of wastes and its open dumping creates an environmental and human health hazards. After heat treatment, slaughterhouse wastes are converted to a non-hazardous organic product, an environment friendly strategy for abattoir waste management. The drying technology allows the recycling of slaughterhouse wastes into an organic fertilizer, has been utilized as nitrogen rich fertilizer for the cultivation of different vegetables. The organic fertilizer made from slaughterhouse wastes enriched soil fertility, health and water-holding capacity. The aim of the study is to review the recent trend of utilization of rural slaughterhouse wastes in agriculture and its effect on soil and climate.
