Assessment of the potential for power deficit reduction using renewable energy sources. The case of Lebanon
The main goal of any power system is to ensure the demand for electricity from all consumers. The ability of the power system to provide power supply to consumers is characterized by its system adequacy. In most countries, the acceptable adequacy level is between 3 and 35 deficit hours per year. At the same time, there are deficit power systems in which proper adequacy level is not provided. The paper analyses the operation of the electric power system in deficit mode. This problem is considered in the example of Lebanon, which has been in such mode for several decades. The paper describes the technical condition of the power system and climatic, geographical, and social conditions in which it operates. The analysis of renewable energy potential is performed. Based on annual climatic data calculated three scenarios for renewable power sources commissioning in Lebanon. Power balance is analyzed in presence of renewable power sources of different capacity. Defined capacity of wind and solar power generation that can be installed in Lebanese power system without special control systems and energy storage for their operation.
