Delay performance of continuous bit rate (CBR) traffic through an ATM multiplexer
The authors describe an approximation for the delay distribution of CBR packets passing through an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) multiplexer. It is based on the distribution of an M/D/1 queue with the arrival rate and the server idle probability suitably modified. The approximation is easy to calculate and is found to be quite accurate for a wide range of values simulated. Since the Laplace-Stieltjes transform (LST) of the distribution is also known, it is relatively easy to estimate the distribution of the edge-to-edge delay through the ATM network. By assuming statistical independence of the delay performance among the ATM nodes, and that the output process of a node is still approximately deterministic, the LST of the edge-to-edge delay distribution is the product of the individual LSTs and can be inverted using standard Laplace inversion techniques.<>
