Dynamic detection of hidden-surfaces using a MIMD multiprocessor
A technique for accelerating the hidden surface removal operation within a MIMD parallel-processing machine is presented. This technique is based on back-to-front and front-to-back hidden surface removal algorithms which reduce image rendering time by adaptive rendering termination. These algorithms terminate volume rendering operations as soon as the image at a processor is informationally complete. Using these two algorithms, a technique for allowing each processor to dynamically and independently select the fastest volume rendering algorithm based on its local processing circumstances is described.<>
