Integration of Electric Motorcycle Charging Station Based on PV System in Kigali City
Many countries including Rwanda are actively encouraging investment in the e-mobility sector by converting the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) motorcycles to Electric-motorcycles to reduce CO2 emission. However, the charging cost is high due to the use of electricity from the grid and lack of common standard voltage level to facilitate the battery recharging and swapping. This paper aims to make a comparison between the charging cost from the national grid and from charging station based on a PV system towards integration of solar PV based charging station. Furthermore, this paper presents the optimal PV sizing and design for cost effective of the E-motorcycle charging station based on a PV system. The results demonstrate that after integrating a solar PV system with a grid-connected charging station, the swapping cost is lowered from ${\$}$ 1 to 0.2212 US dollars. This new option helps in the transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycles, which emit greenhouse gases and have high gasoline costs, to electric motorcycles, which are more environmentally friendly and have lower fuel costs, as is the goal of our country and Africa.
