Development of a New Viaduct Structure to Achieve a High-Amenity Under-Viaduct Space
This article describes a manner in which viaducts might be constructed so as to improve potential amenities for space beneath the structures. In particular, vibration caused by trains carried by the viaduct needs to be diminished in order to improve the commercial viability of such spaces. By inserting elastic materials into fit-jointed structures like beams and columns, such vibrations can be reduced. Researchers employed alternating loading tests and conducted seismic response analysis to quantify their design. The modeled viaduct was jointed with Gerber girders at each end, had a span length of 10 meters, and has seven longitudinal spans. Both traditionally jointed and elastic jointed structures were analyzed. Seismic stimulation that was used conformed to standard aseismatic standards.
