A Traffic-aware Street Lighting System Based on Fuzzy Logic Controller
Streetlamps place a significant burden on electricity consumption and are challenging to install in remote areas and dangerous portions of highways. A solution to this problem is the usage of stand-alone PV-powered streetlamps. However, the unwise way of operating these systems leads to quick battery insufficiency. In order to prolong the system time usage and guarantee security, in this paper, we propose a light controller based on fuzzy logic and future traffic forecast, which adapts the brightness of street lamps according to road demand and the battery’s remaining energy. First, we developed a model for traffic forecasting based on a real-world dataset. Then the light controller is validated by simulation in Matlab. The results indicate that the proposed light controller is able to extend the autonomy of the light system while at the same time ensuring security on the road.
