The Role of CCUS in North America Energy System Decarbonization

With the ratification of the Paris Agreement, the world has committed to “holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels”. Canada, Mexico and the U.S. formally joined the Paris Agreement in April 2016. On June 1, 2017, President Trump has decided to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris climate accord. However, the major U.S. companies and states said that they will go on with their own plans to reduce CO2 emissions and new alliance of states, cities, and corporations has already vowed to help the U.S. meet the Paris reduction goals. Canada had committed a 30% reduction on 2005 GHG emissions, by 2030 and 80% reduction by 2050. Notwithstanding that Mexico’s contribution to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is relatively low, the country has undertaken important challenges to address the problem of climate change. Mexico set priority goals for controlling global warming: reducing GHG emissions by 22% by 2030 a 50% reduction in the volume of emissions by 2050.
