Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) which distributes cloud computing capabilities at the edge of radio access network is expected to be intrinsic part of future networks. MEC exposes great advantages in support of Device-to-Device (D2D) communication technology. In this paper, we present an approach to define a new mobile edge service, which enables applications to discover device proximity and initiate direct device communications. The proposed mobile edge service is described by typical use cases, the respective data model and interface definition. Some implementation aspects are discussed.
