Voice packet interarrival jitter over IP switching
We measure the difference in packet spacing of voice packets at the receiver compared to that at the sender. The difference, interarrival jitter is used as a measure of the quality for real-time voice applications. Our focus is on comparison of Internet protocol (IP) store and forward and IP switching, a new technology with the purpose of speeding routing. For reference we also compare the difference to overall delay characteristics. We find out that the difference is small compared to end-to end delay and to sampling time and comparable to network delay. We show that, with the interarrival difference measure, IP switching is better suited for real-time traffic than conventional routing.
