A techno-economic comparison of the RACE 2024 BAF and other broadband access systems
The broadband access systems for residential and small business users being developed within the RACE 2024 project is described. The system developed transmits asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) cells over a passive optical network (PON) at 622 MB/s using time division multiplexing/time division multiple access (TDM/TDMA) techniques. The use of a medium access control algorithm allows dynamic bandwidth allocation between the 32 subscriber terminations. A techno-economic comparison between the system being implemented and alternative systems is described and preliminary results of the comparison given.
