EVs depend on the availability of efficient energy storage devices for propulsion. They can also be coupled with an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), referred to as Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) which provide improved range and power. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are currently being considered as a potential energy storage device for the propulsion of the EVs due to their numerous advantages such as high energy density and power density, compact size and good cyclability. The rapid commercialization of EVs and HEVs has led to a rapidly increasing demand for high-power and high-energy-density batteries. In this regard, a standard method for testing of performance of lithium-ion batteries is indispensable for securing a basic level of performance and in collecting essential data for the design of vehicle systems and battery packs. This review discusses various factors which are considered while selecting LIBs for EV applications, various national and international standards currently available and adopted for performance testing of LIBs used in EVs and HEVs.
