Transforming a utility's existing distribution network from its current state to a smart grid requires a comprehensive program of discrete projects which incrementally improve the distribution network. The projects, which include the deployment of new field equipment, communication technology and smart grid applications, need to each deliver clear, measureable benefits to all stakeholders. The paper offers a target smart grid architecture given stage wise that may not necessarily all be in sequence.
