This chapter aims to reveal the evolution of public safety communication. As compared to fifth generation (5G), public safety standardization has not been accorded due priority. Communication regarding mission‐critical voice has been delivered by employing land mobile radio systems that achieve public safety standards and are operated by a single jurisdiction or agency. Since public safety is a unique mission, the emergency responders need to be equipped with wireless broadband devices as well as services that will assure access, coverage, and security as well as a high level of reliability, which is unlikely to be provided by commercial entities. The fourth generation (4G) long term evolution wireless network offered the basis for the development of 5G. The 4G and 5G wireless communication networks can provide public safety community capabilities to enhance their responsiveness to emergencies. 3rd generation partnership project standardization involves a radio access network, a core network, terminals, as well as services and systems.
