Qualitative comparison of the behavior for a five-phase induction motor in error states for different stator windings connections
The basis of this article is to investigate the properties of a five-phase induction motor, in various stator windings connections. The suitability of using a multi-phase machine is in applications such as EV, HEV, shipping industry, or electric aircraft. This is due to the better properties of multiphase machines, such as higher torques, lower phase loads, smoother torque, or better fault tolerance, which is ensured by further degrees of freedom of multiphase motors. We know that the stator windings of a five-phase induction motor can be connected in three configurations. It is a star connection, pentagon connection, and pentacle connection, while in all three cases the motor will have different properties. The basis of this article is to find out how the motor will behave in case of error conditions and what effect the different stator winding configurations will have on this. The result of the article is an evaluation in which of the connections the properties of the motor during the failure are the best. All results are compared with the state when the engine was running without failure. These facts are ascertained by simulation and subsequently verified on a real engine.
