A characterization of telecommunication services in the 1990s
A characterization is presented of voice, data, facsimile, image, audio and video telecommunication services of the next decade. User-oriented features such as performance criteria are related to transport requirements. A broad diversity of services is described, and these are then classified into groups from a transport perspective. This leads to implications for cell priority designation for asynchronous time-division multiplexing (ATDM). A service groups based on a community of interest is shown to offer a scenario for the introduction of ATDM which is attractive both to the user and the telecommunications company.<>
