The effect of scattering processes on high frequency ground penetrating radar surveys on impact melt breccia - Early results from an arctic field campaign at the Haughton impact structure, Devon Island, Canada
A 3D ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey was performed at the Haughton impact structure, Devon Island, Canada over heterogeneous carbonate-dominated impact melt breccias. The survey location was chosen for the purpose of qualifying the effect of a scattering medium on the depth of useful imaging in the context of planetary exploration. This survey, and associated 2D, common mid-point (CMP) and error control surveys, show that the depth of penetration is less on the brecciated unit than desired despite the electrical suitability of the material to GPR.
