A review on two different systems in municipal sewage treatment plant
The sewage treatment plant technology in Malaysia has evolved from pre-independence era of no treatment around 1950s to the pilot plant by adopting modern technology and start commissioning moving bed biofilm reactor around 2013. The existing mechanized compact sewage treatment plants were dominant by sequential batch reactor, intermittently decanted extended aeration and membrane bioreactor. The operator conducted continuous improvement project for conventional activated sludge system through energy management system to optimum the regional plant performance with the capacity up to 350,000 PE. The next step is to introduce energy audit for moving bed biofilm reactor at the same plant capacity category up to 300,000 PE. Hence, the aim of this research is to study the comparison of compactness footprint and baseline energy performance index. Based on this baseline energy performance index study, the operator has a potential to reduce the uncertain operation expenditure cost. The results from energy performance index showed that the moving bed biofilm reactor is more efficient compared to conventional activated sludge.
