Although the underlying mechanisms involved in laser beam bending are generally accepted 2),8),9), there is no simple process model which is suited to process design. For defined forming operations it is essential to ensure selective generation of the temperature field in the part. The progress of the process will be analysed experimentally in a single machining operation using forming mechanisms and variables of relevance to the temperature gradient, and conclusions will be drawn from this regarding a process model suitable for practical application. The modelling process will be conducted in two stages: firstly the calculation of the temperature field inside the workpiece and secondly the reproduction of the mechanical bending operation.
