The author explores the technological evolution to rotary recorders and its potential value to future mass storage library systems. Cassette-based recording systems using tape with widths of 4 mm, 8 mm, 1/2-in., 19 mm, and 1-in. are compared. Some applications are discussed in terms of the perceived technical needs and cost constraints. Many of the primary design considerations for the implementation of a mass storage library are discussed from the standpoint of available tape cassettes, formats, recording devices, and automatic cassette libraries. Comparative data for existing as well as for emerging rotary recorder products is provided. Interface issues are explored along with mass storage library systems. >
