The interpretation of key concepts of distance education and distance learning is given on the basis of scientific sources analysis. The historical stages of basic concepts formation of distance learning (correspondence training, distance learning) are analyzed. Modern understanding of the concepts and terms of distance learning is based on its interpretation as an activity using Internet technologies and resources. It compares distance education and distance learning, related concepts of open education and blended learning. Distance learning is considered as a qualitatively new, promising form of learning.
