A joint European project, CAD geometry data exchange (CADEX), which deals with the CAD-exchange domain of computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM), is discussed. The CIM context is outlined, and alternative integration strategies are discussed. The selected solution, STEP (standard for the exchange of product model data) neutral file, is discussed in detail. The implementation implications and project status are given. CADEX is one of the first projects to develop STEP-processors for commercial use.<>
