Mathematical Modelling & MATLAB Simulation of Diesel Engine
The diesel engines play an important role in today’s automotive world. The computer simulation of the processes in these engines is the key to reducing costs in the development of less polluting and more efficient combustion engines. The objective of the work is to model and control processes in the cylinder of the diesel engine. In the first part of the paper the detailed description of a mathematical model of a cylinder is given. This includes the description of cylinders thermodynamics, geometry, mass flows, combustion process and engine performance. Turbocharger modelling for the calculation of mean exhaust temperature and other parameters related to it also done. The second part is focused on MATLAB programing based on mathematical modelling. The results obtained by MATLAB simulation can be used to obtain some fairly good estimates of engine performance. These estimates are most useful for the understanding of basic engine performance. It also helps in assessing modifications as regards valve sizing, other geometrical parameters and various fuels.
