Enhanced Visualization of News Shot Cloud with Employing Circular Layout

TV news programs are one of major information sources for daily lives. Since the computer storage cost has reduced significantly, today we can digitally archive a huge amount of TV news programs. On the other hand, as the archive size grows larger, the cost for browsing and utilizing news video archives also increases significantly. To circumvent this problem, we devised a visualization method called "News Shot Cloud" in our former work. The news shot cloud displays TV news shots in the similar manner with the tag clouds. In this poster, we present an enhancement method of the news shot cloud by modifying the thumbnail layout from the conventional linear layout to the circular. The design and the advantages of the new layout are shown with experimental implementation. The new layout is more helpful to identify informative news shots rapidly, and at the same time, it also helps users to examine less-weighted news shots to find lower-ranked but unexpectedly informative ones.
