Jocular archaisms and anachronisms in the dictionaries of the modern Polish language Summary The basic purpose of this article is to provide a survey of the archaic and anachronistic linguistic forms which are jocularly marked in the modern Polish language – in general-purpose dictionaries of the Polish language they are marked with joint i.e. chronological (arch. – archaiczne [archaic], daw. – dawne [obsolete], histor. – archaizm rzeczowy [an instance of historical realia/archaism], historyzm [a historism], przestarz., przest. – przestarzałe [obsolete], wychodzące z użycia [obsolescent]), expressive (żart. – żartobliwe [jocular]), and, in numerous cases – stylistic classifiers (książk. – książkowe [literary], pot.– potoczne [colloquial]), e.g. białogłowa, dziewoja, duszny, konsyliarz, mięsiwo, obertas. The lexical material proves that the modern speakers of the Polish language eagerly tap into the storehouse of the early language – these words are not only appealing to them but also original due to their capability of referring to a new reality in unique ways.
