Chapter 2 Opportunities and challenges in transforming higher education through machine learning
Inthetwenty-firstcentury,technologyhasbecomethedrivingforceofed-ucation. COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the education system and has made educators to rephrase, rethink and re-strategize the model of the current education system. Recently, there has been a paradigm shift toward online teaching and learning right from the primary schools to the university. Embracing technology for a quality higher education is becoming a new norm. Several research works are ongoing to understand how the latest advancement in technology can change the future of education. Industries such as healthcare, financial services, retail and automobile are widely using the disrupting technologies like big data, artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, virtual reality and augmented reality for marketing, sales, customer engagement and many more. Despite several research works and recommendations in the field of education, there has not been a significant improvement in the use of these technologies to improve the quality of higher education. In this chapter, a 360-degree approach to education model using machine learning is discussed and also a conceptual framework has been proposed on how machine learning can be adopted in the different stages of higher education to enhance the quality of education delivery and prepare job-ready graduates. © 2021 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.
