Compact X-Band SIW Antenna with Reduced Size Using CSRR Incorporation
The demand of compact antenna implementable for modern wireless communication has grown up significantly. Some efforts to produce the antenna in compact size are still becoming interesting research topics. In this paper, a complimentary split-ring-resonator (CSRR) incorporated into the radiator of substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) antenna is proposed to acquire the antenna with reduced size. By taking the advantage of CSRR as a small electrically resonator, it is expected the resonant frequency of SIW antenna could be lowered yielding the downsizing of antenna dimension. The proposed antenna which is intended to work at X-band frequency is designed on a 1.6mm thick FR4 epoxy dielectric substrate with the radiator takes an extended half-circle shape. Meanwhile, the CSRR is constructed by 2 concentric rings which are slotted upon the radiator of X-band SIW antenna. The characterization result shows that the realized X-band SIW antenna resonates at the frequency of 10.875GHz with the gain of 1.32dBi which is comparable to the simulation result. In addition, the potency of size reduction by incorporating CSRR into the SIW antenna is also investigated in comparison to the conventional X-band SIW antenna.
