The Concept of Lightning Detection Network Enhancement on the Kola Peninsula
This paper describes the results of comparing the lightning registration on the Kola Peninsula through single long-range lightning detector and lightning detection network of various manufacturers. The features of the considered lightning detection network are shown when lightning is detected in a given region. The comparative illustrations of discharges from two systems for some days with different thunderstorm activity are given. The similarity of the lightning discharges distribution is shown. Studies show that a large number of lightning detectors in a lightning network considerable improve the accuracy of determining the location of lightning. At the same time, a multidetector network, unlike a single lightning detector, does not determine the lightning polarity. Therefore the experiment revealing reliability of lightning discharge polarity determination has been made. This result allows uniting the systems that provides a basis for lightning detection development in Kola region.
